You’ve probably already heard of online rental service LOVEFiLM. LOVEFiLM rent movies online. You may have also heard rumours of the things which make LOVEFiLM so unique – all your rentals are dealt with quickly and efficiently online, and the dvd or dvds are delivered to your door. The thing that surprises most though is that LOVEFiLM offer rentals with no fixed contract on them. That means you can keep your film or game for as long as you like, with no penalty of late fees. When you’re done with each disc, you simply post it back to LOVEFiLM and wait to receive the next title you request from the site.

How does that work, exactly? Well, unlike most rental shops where membership is free but you pay for every title you take out, LOVEFiLM works with a monthly membership fee that allows you a certain volume of rental capacity. These memberships range from £4.99 to £19.39, and each level includes different benefits, meaning you can pick a package that is perfectly tailored to your lifestyle. If you only watch a film as an occasional treat, you would probably opt for a “Light Use” package.

These are designed “for those who watch every now and then”, giving you up to four rentals a month. For those who are more serious about their viewing, the “Ultimate” packages come with unlimited rentals per month, although you are allowed more discs out at one time and more online viewing time if you pay a slightly higher price. Finally, you can add game rental to any of these packages, usually for just an extra couple of pounds, allowing you to include PS3, XBOX, Wii, and Nintendo DS games in your monthly rentals.

LOVEFiLM is also famous for its free 14 day trial, which has been available ever since the site launched and doesn’t seem to be showing any sign of going away. This generous chance to try the service and see what you think is well worth taking advantage of, and you can either begin making payments after the 14 days and become a full member or simply cancel your membership. Remember, though, the trial is only available once per person, so don’t waste it if you sign up!

The films of 2010

Inevitably, Hollywood still insists that, even as the way we watch films online is more tightly regulated, it is not willing to give up ground on cinema exclusivity and general releases. This means that both on DVD and online, new releases do not come out until up to 6 months after the initial hype and excitement. It can be a real pain waiting for new dvd releases. Perhaps this is fair, cinemas do represent the main source of income for the studios, and it is a much easier way of driving hype with one coordinated release and relatively limited viewing opportunity – short(ish) supply drives demand, after all.

What’s more, piracy – both online and physical – is much more difficult to control when the film is released on media that is easy to copy. Most people now, even if they are willing to indulge in this illegal practice, still have little time for poor recordings. Still, with this in mind, it is the best films of 2010 that are going to be the best films to watch online in 2011, as the services really kick into overdrive. So what shall we look out for?

For the kids, four of the world’s top ten grossing films this year have been animated, and were also critically well received. Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, Despicable Me and How to Train Your Dragon all grossed at least $500m worldwide, with Toy Story 3 topping $1,000m.

You don’t have to be a child to enjoy any of these films, but for true grown-up blockbusters Inception is a must-see, and Iron Man 2 and Clash of the Titans also made big money and should be worth catching up on. 2010 wasn’t just about blockbusters, though, and there are plenty of critically acclaimed films that will be available to watch online in the coming year.

The Kids are Alright, True Grit and Hereafter are all tipped for the best film Oscar in January 2011 and you should be able to watch these films online before you know it. Click here to find out more
